Hi, I’m Doug

I currently work as the Director of User Experience Design at Dexcom, a manufacturer of continuous glucose monitors.

I’m an advocate for patient-centric design. As a patient living with type-1 diabetes for several decades, I’m interested in developing new ways of using medical and lifestyle data to improve health outcomes. I’ve served as an ePatient with Stanford Medicine X, speaking at their conferences, and previously organizing their New York City pop-up events. I’ve also been a featured speaker at conferences including the American Association of Diabetes Educators, Quantified Self Public Health Symposium, Health Datapalooza, the Precision Health Initiative, the Accu-Chek Networking Meeting, and the DiabetesMine Innovation Summit.

In 2011 I founded Databetes, a software company that developed self-management support tools for diabetes patients. We released Meal Memory, a mobile app that helped patients better understand how food impacted their glucose.

After years of collaboration with Dexcom, I joined their user experience team. There I’ve managed the teams building the company’s core software products including G7, Stelo, Clarity, and Follow.

My design work has been featured in the BBC, Fast Co. Design, Popular Science, and Book of Circles: Visualizing Spheres of Knowledge.

Previously, I worked as a freelance photographer in NYC and Beijing, China. My photos of events from 9/11 to the Beijing Olympics have been published in leading media publications including the New York Times, Bloomberg Business Week, the Financial Times, and Agence France-Press. My commercial clients included Nike, the NBA, Apple, Daimler, Ford, and the World Economic Forum.

In my spare time, I love to cook and hunt for the best tacos around LA. I’ve run 4 marathons and completed three triathlons.
